Herbal diet supplements are all the rage these days. To many Americans, a natural, plant-based approach to weight loss is more appealing than harsh, dangerous chemicals. Walk into a drug store or health store, though and you are inundated with a dazzling array of supplements, many formulations which have never been clinically tested. One supplement that has been tested and is proven to aid in the loss of weight is Garcinia Cambogia.
What is Garcinia Cambogia?
This herb comes from the rind of the citrus fruit which is native to Southeast Asia. The rind contains Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA). HCA has long been used in cooking and is known for its ability to burn fat and calories. This organic acid is said to speed up your metabolism and help you feel full which decreases your appetite. It may also help lower your cholesterol levels.
Is it effective?
Pure Garcinia Cambogia extract has been studied more extensively perhaps than any other herbal supplement and the findings are hopeful. According to a study by the National Institute of Health, published in the US National Library of Medicine, while HCA in itself does not cause weight loss, it does increase fat oxidation and metabolism and it will keep you feeling full longer. It also has been shown to increase serotonin levels (which reduces depression). The theory is that the better you feel emotionally, the better choices you’ll make regarding eating habits, the more energy you’ll have making you more active and you’ll be less likely to indulge in emotional overeating.
Not all Garcinia Cambogia pure extract is equal as different companies will use varying formulations. Some companies will use ‘fillers’- ingredients with little or no nutritive value-and less HCA in order to make more of a profit. For HCA to be effective and to ensure you are buying a top-quality product, you must follow these guidelines:
The label must read “Garcinia Cambogia” or “HCA” and the HCA content must be at least 50%
It should list 100% of all natural ingredients on the label-no ‘fillers
The daily dose should be in at least a 500 mg. capsule (less than that and you will be wasting money by taking multiple capsules)
It must read that it was produced in FDA registered, GMP certified laboratories.
Garcinia Cambogia can be purchased in most health food stores and online. As with any dietary supplement, it should be taken in conjunction with eating a nutritious balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise are the best things for getting in shape and slimming down.
